🐾 Trainer Tip Friday: Work the 3 D’s – Distance, Duration, and Distraction 🧠

Following up on last week’s Trainer Tip about dogs making “mistakes”…
We want to dig a little deeper and talk about what actually makes things easier or harder for your dog. There are three key variables that can drastically change how your dog performs a cue—Distance, Duration, and Distraction—a.k.a. The 3 D’s.

At Zoom Room, we often hear:
“My dog already knows that cue—they do it great at home!”

And we believe you! But here’s the thing: doing it in your living room or alone in the gym is a very different challenge than doing it with people, dogs, smells, and sounds all around.

Let’s break it down:
Say you’re practicing “Watch Me” (your dog holding eye contact until you mark and reward).
✅ Step 1: Get consistency—4 out of 5, 9 out of 10 successful 3-second Watch Mes.
Then add ONE “D” at a time:

🔁 Duration – Increase the time they have to maintain focus (e.g., 3 to 6 seconds).
📏 Distance – Stand up or take a step back.
🎯 Distraction – Have someone calmly walk behind your dog or toss a toy nearby.

🐕 And bear in mind: the moment you step outside your house, you’ve already added a huge Distraction factor. Even if you’re in a quiet field or an empty parking lot, the smells, sounds, and feel of the environment shift everything for your dog. That alone can make training way more dynamic. So don’t judge the session by what you expect—work with what your dog is doing today, and build from there.

Every time you add a new challenge, rebuild consistency. Don’t expect your dog to magically “get it.” They’re not being stubborn—they just need clarity.

👉 If your dog is struggling, take a breath. Analyze what’s happening. Lower your criteria. Get a win. Then build from there.

In class, you might see us act overly excited, squeak toys, or ask you to cue from a few feet away. Sometimes we even train outside, which adds natural distractions like new smells and sounds. All of this is designed to help your dog generalize cues beyond the walls of the gym.

Next time you’re out and about, keep the 3 D’s in mind.
Feeling like things are too easy? Add a challenge.
Struggling? Scale it back.

🎥 And if you’re unsure how to adjust your training—don’t go it alone.
Write things down. Take a video. Bring it up in class. Or give us a call 719-301-9746) or send us an email (cos@zoomroom.com).
We’re always happy to provide that third-party insight to help you understand what’s going on and how to make the situation better—for both you and your dog. 💬🐾
