🐾 Trainer Tip Friday: Why Your Dog’s Mistakes Are Gold

At home—or in a familiar environment—your dog is a total rockstar.
You can walk across the room, drop your keys, open the fridge, and they stay calmly in a down like they’re about to earn their PhD in Good Dog Behavior.

But the moment you step outside, it’s like all that training goes out the window. Suddenly your perfect little angel is barking, pulling, ignoring cues… and you’re left thinking, “Wait… what happened?”

Here’s the thing: they didn’t forget.
You just changed the environment—and for your dog, that changes everything.

🔍 Why It Happens

Dogs don’t automatically apply what they’ve learned to new situations.
To your dog, “sit” in the living room isn’t the same as “sit” at the park with kids running around, squirrels darting through trees, and a dozen unfamiliar smells on the wind.

That’s why a dog who performs beautifully at home might struggle in a new or distracting setting. It’s not because they’re being stubborn. It’s because they haven’t learned how to do that skill in that context yet.

💡 Mistakes Are Clues

Every time your dog “messes up,” it’s not a failure—it’s feedback. It tells you exactly what still needs work. And that’s super helpful.

Here are a few common examples:

  • Your dog crushes recall at home… but ignores you at the dog park.
👉 That tells you recall needs practice in more exciting environments.

  • They walk nicely in your neighborhood… but pull like crazy when you’re downtown.
👉 That’s a sign leash walking needs more reps around new stimuli.

  • They can stay while you unload the dishwasher… but break instantly when a skateboard rolls by.
👉 That shows you where to build distraction resistance next.

These “mistakes” aren’t regressions—they’re training gold. You’ve just identified where the real-world work starts.

🧘‍♂️ For You, the Human

Let go of previous personal bests.
I know it’s frustrating when your dog used to do something perfectly and now seems to struggle. But instead of trying to get back to where you were, focus on who your dog is in this moment.

Start small, build consistency, and then grow from there.

Think of it like going back to the gym after a long break. You know how to lift weights, but you’re not jumping back in at your old PR. You ease in, rebuild strength, and celebrate progress—not perfection.

Same goes for training your dog. There’s no rush. No race. Just the two of you learning together.
