My Dog is My Hero Because…

While Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants is in the running to earn the title of the National League’s Most Valuable Player, Buster Pawsey of Pacific Grove has definitely earned the title of MVP — Most Valuable Pooch!

Buster, a 6-month-old Fox Red Labrador Retriever, joined our family at the end of May. At that time, we had been without our chocolate Lab, Mocha, for about 7 months. She passed away last October at the age of 13 years, after having been in our family longer than our own children. Our house felt so empty without her, and there was definitely a void in our lives.

While Mocha can never be replaced in our hearts, Buster is making his own special place there. He immediately bonded with our two children, ages 10 and 12, and has been a source of energy, fun, an affection … as well as some damage to our house and yard!

Buster has a knack of reading the personalities and moods of other dogs and people. He is social and playful when the situation allows, but he is also patient and reserved when he meets an older dog or a rescue dog. Several dog owners have commented that their dogs are usually nervous around other dogs, yet they feel comfortable with Buster. When my mother broke her ankle on a recent visit here, Buster even contained his puppiness long enough to lay with her on the ouch, resting his head upon her cast.

While Buster hasn’t been around long enough to have accomplished any truly heroic deeds, he has certainly been a hero to our family!
