My Dog is My Hero Because…

2009 is a year I would love to forget.  In January, I was layed off from my job; May, lost my house as a result of the job loss;  July, lost my long-term relationship to alcoholism;  August, had to file bankruptcy; and in October, was diagnosed with ADH/DCIS breast cancer.   By the time my treatments were final in December, I really didn’t want to get out of bed for fear of what tragedy might hit me next.  At that time, I had a 17 year old cat who loved that she could snuggle with me all day long.  She was a great source of comfort.

January, 2010, a dear friend of mine went to the animal shelter in El Cajon, CA and picked out Lucy for me.  Kerry phoned to let me know that someone was waiting for me and to come meet her.  As soon as I met Lucy, she snuggled in the corner of her kennel so I could rub her belly.  We went home that day and it’s been happily ever after ever since.

Kerry’s rationale for my needing a dog is that with their needs being different….walks, potty time, play time….Lucy would be good for getting me out of the house.  Here we are nearly three years later and Kerry was absolutely right!  Little by little, Lucy and I got out of the house, went to parks, learned to play ball, met some other dog friends and their parents.

Lucy gave me a reason to keep facing life head-on.  Who knows where I’d be without her.

(The picture is of Lucy’s first ride to the dog park at Balboa Park.  I just love the smile on her face.)
